I AM directed by Secretary Sir E Grey to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 31st ultimo, transmitting information as to the purchase of 460 chests of Indian opium in Singapore for shipment to Macao.
In reply, I am to state that Sir E. Grey concurs in the instructions which Mr. Secretary Harcourt proposes to send to the governor of the Straits Settlements, and that His Majesty's Minister at Lisbon is being directed to bring the matter to the notice of the Portuguese Government, and to request them to inform the Government of Macao of the steps which are being taken.
